Bringing a new life into the world is a momentous occasion, and every mother’s journey is unique. My own journey led me down a path I hadn’t initially envisioned: a planned C-section. I’d like to share my personal experience and provide you with insights into what to expect when preparing for a planned C-section. It’s important to note that while this procedure may not have been my first choice, it ultimately turned out to be a positive and healing experience.

Understanding the Reasons
In my case, a planned C-section became necessary due to a previous myomectomy surgery. This surgical procedure, which removed uterine fibroids, posed potential risks for a vaginal birth. My gynaecologist recommended a C-section to ensure both my baby’s safety and my own.
Planning and Preparation
My journey began with a thorough consultation with my gynaecologist, who explained the medical reasons for the planned C-section. I was encouraged to ask questions and share my concerns, which helped me feel more confident about the decision.
Birth Plan
Despite having a planned C-section, I was able to create a birth plan. I discussed my preferences with my gynaecologist and medical team, including having my husband by my side during the procedure and playing soothing music in the operating room.
The Day of the C-Section
On the scheduled day, I arrived at the hospital, where the admissions staff guided me through the necessary paperwork and preparations.
The surgery was performed under spinal anaesthesia, which numbed the lower half of my body. I didn’t feel pain during the procedure, only some pressure and tugging sensations.
The surgical team, under the guidance of my gynaecologist, made a small incision in my abdomen to access the uterus. It felt like a surreal moment as they carefully delivered my baby. The incisions were skillfully closed with stitches.
Recovery and Postopartum Care
After the surgery, I spent time in the recovery room while my vital signs were monitored. Knowing that my gynaecologist and medical team were looking out for my well-being was reassuring.
I was provided with effective pain relief options to ensure my comfort during the recovery process.
I began gentle movement and walking as soon as possible, which helped improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of complications.
Breastfeeding Challenge
In the first few days after the C-section, I encountered breastfeeding issues. However, with the unwavering support of my healthcare team, I was able to overcome these challenges within just three days.
While my journey into motherhood took an unexpected turn with a planned C-section, I want to emphasise that it was a positive experience. My healing process was remarkably fast, and I couldn’t have done it without the incredible support of my family during the first month. Facing breastfeeding issues was challenging, but with the guidance of my talented healthcare team, we overcame them together. My journey underscores the importance of flexibility and the incredible strength we find within ourselves as mothers, no matter the path our birthing experience takes.
